Experiencing Colonialism: Identity and Resistance in French Algeria – NEW!
This module offers an introduction to the history of colonialism, and the process of anti-colonial national awakening leading to political decolonization by exploring the experiences and perspectives of people in French-occupied Algeria across several generations from 1830 to 1930. Using a mix of secondary and primary sources, the module foregrounds the experiences of Algerian colonial subjects, and explores how the events of this period – from invasion, to settler colonialism, the outbreak of World War I, and the interwar era – shaped the lives of Algerian men, women, and children, led to new forms of resistance, and even new identities and a variety of visions for the future.
